DISCLAIMER: I have tried to verify the accuracy of all information herein, and in some cases it has proven to be an exercise in frustration. I have also listed information which I personally dispute, with those reasons for dispute being detailed.
BACKGROUND:
I am descended from Edmond Hodges, my 4th great grandfather, who lived in Surry County NC., Lawrence County IN, and in Nodaway County MO. The Hodges family history is a bit of a challenge and in future updates to this page I may end up raising more questions than answers. Right now one mystery I have is, what was the real surname of his wife Elizabeth? For many years I have believed that it was Robinson but I have seen one source saying that it was Summers. It's possible that her birth name was Summers and she married a Robinson before marrying Edmond Hodges.
Also, research of Surry County tax records indicates the existence of Edmond Hodges, Sr, and Edmond Hodges, Jr. So which of these Edmonds am I descended from? Junior? Or both?
There is also some ambiguity regarding his daughter, Martha (Patsy) Hodges. There may have been more than one person with this name, who are related. What we do know is that she married William Riley Parker, and moved with him to Lawrence County IN, and later Doniphan County KS.
What I also know is that the Hodges family was one of the pioneering families of Surry County NC and also lived in Virginia.
It is presently presumed that anyone of European descent with the surname of Hodges who is now living in/near Mt Airy NC, and Morgan County MO, are distant relatives. As time permits I hope to trace the Hodges descendants downwards, as I am doing with the Parkers.
NEW: Ancestry.com has Edmund Hodges being born on 1776-11-10, in Surry County NC, with a death date of 1864 in Syracuse (Morgan) MO. His children that they listed match with what I have. (2024-09-23)
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Edmond Hodges was born on 1776-11-10 according to one source (ancestry.com) listed above with another source having it at 1766-11-10, in what was then the North Carolina colony of British North America. Ancestry.com has his parents as being Edmund Edward Hodges (1756-1838) and his mother as Eleanor Allinder (1758-1856). His wife was Elizabeth Robinson. His children are listed as Martha (Patsy) Hodges (1804-1880), Aaron Hodges (1806-1893), Abel Hodges (1806-1899), Elizabeth Hodges (1813-1885), two listings for Sarah Hodges (1810-1888), and Edmund Hodges (1776-1864).
The other source has his father as being Welcome William Hodges and his mother as being Mary Anne Turner. If these were his parents, his father would have been 60 years old and his mother 65 years old when Edmond was born. That said, they could very likely be his paternal grandparents.
The other source also has conflicting information as to who he married. One wife is listed as Rachel Lennon and another as Elizabeth Summers, and some of us who have looked into this have him as marrying Elizabeth Robinson. He is known to have had a grandson named John Robinson Hodges, which lends credence to his mother's surname being Robinson.
Edmond Hodges was known to have been living in Surry County, NC, in 1802 and in 1806. The 1810 census of Surry County, has listed "Edmon Hodges".
My research has Edmond Hodges and his wife moving to Lawrence County, IN, along with his son in law William Riley Parker and other members of the Parker and Hodges families. He is known to have lived there in 1841. He later on moved to Morgan County, MO, where he died at the age of 98. I have established that other members of the Hodges family were in that part of Missouri at that time.
In my research into this and other families, it is interesting to note how the pioneering families formed alliances. We have the Hodges sons marrying Caudle daughters.

6. Martha (Patsy) Hodges, my 3rd great grandmother, born c1811 or in 1804 in Surry County NC. Married William Riley Parker in Surry on 1826-11-25. They moved to Lawrence County IN, and later on Iowa Point (Doniphan) KS. After her husband's death, she lived with one of her sons in Pueblo, CO, and passed in 1880. This is based on my own research.
7. Sarah Ann Hodges, born 1811-09-17 in Surry County NC. Married twice. Peter Bowers, and Daniel Veach. This needs to be researched. Died 1883-09-15 near Stanford (Monroe) IN. Trivia: she had a niece named Sarah Ann Parker. Two source verification for her being a daughter of Edmond Hodges.
8. Elizabeth Hodges, born February 1813 in Surry County NC. Married Lorenzo Dow Howard in Surry County NC on 1832-06-18. Lived in Indian Creek Township, Lawrence County IN, in 1850. Lived in Township 61, Gentry County MO in 1860. Died in December 1885 in Unionville, Putnam County, MO. Two source verification.
More:
Edmond Hodges had a son named Aaron Hodges, born 1806-08-06 in Surry County NC. His wife was Rebecca Caudle, who he married on 1831-07-21. Aaron Hodges died on 1893-12-22.
There is also a record of Abel Hodges, also born on 1806-08-06 in Surry County. If familysearch.org is correct (and they are not always right), Abel was born 1802-08-08. So which is it? Were Aaron and Abel twins? Abel Hodges married Jane Winslow Caudle c1832 in Surry County. Abel Hodges died on 1899-01-30 in Herrington, Dickinson County, Kansas. Familysearch.org has their mother as being Elizabeth Summers, which I have already disputed above.
